Not a regular zoo as you usually know it, the Lao Zoo aims to conserve and protect endangered animal species in the country.
Their conservation project focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating animals that have been retrieved from the illegal wildlife trade, as well as breeding endangered species in captivity for eventual release into the wild.
The zoo also educates visitors about conservation and the importance of protecting endangered animals. In the past, the zoo has faced criticism in the past for its treatment of animals and lack of proper facilities, and there have been concerns about the welfare of the animals in their care.
The centre is located in the small town of Ban Keun, 60km North of Vientiane Capital. It can be accessed by public bus on the Vientiane–Ban Keun route departing daily from the Morning Market.
