Limited Ticket Purchase Options and Passport ID Required

Believe it or not, online booking is not available to purchase tickets on the Lao-China Railway train (LCR). Instead, you will have to go in person to one of the LCR train stations, with all passengers traveling with you, and present valid Passport IDs to the cashier to get your tickets. Payment has to be done only in cash in Lao Kip, the LCR does not accept Credit Card of BCEL One as a method of payment. Ticket sales offices away from the train stations are also now open in central Luang Prabang and on the ground floor of Vientiane Center in central Vientiane.

The "Few Days in Advance" Rule

The Lao-China Railway operates on a unique ticketing schedule. Tickets are sold only a few days in advance of the intended travel date, usually ranging from 3 to 7 days. Types of Trains

Be careful, while the Lao-China Railway promotes its fast speed train all over Internet, they actually operate two main types of trains: the Express Trains, numbered Cxx, are these red and blue high-speed trains going as fast as 160km/h, making the trip from Vientiane to Luand Prabang in less than a couple of hours. That's really what you should go for as you will have your full day remaining to plan your visits. Alternatively, the green and yellow Scenic Trains, numbered Kxx, are much slower and either for travelers looking to savor the mesmerizing vistas of Laos at a more leisurely pace, or more probably for those who could not wake up early and did not get tickets for the Express Train.

Classes of Accommodation

Train tickets are rather cheap. While the Standard Class is clean and comfortable enough for a 2-hours journey, you may want to treat yourself with a Business Class trip that will provide you comfortable seating huge legroom, complimentary drinks and a preferential boarding process.

a. Boarding Time: Ensure you arrive at the station with ample time to spare, you should arrive at least 30 minutes before departure time, and 45 minutes to be safe. The boarding process can be time-consuming, particularly during peak travel seasons as you will go through an airport-style security screening and an organized boarding process.

b. Timely Departures: Lao-China Railway trains depart punctually, so be at the platform well ahead of the departure time as they will not wait for you.
